- Dynamite blast led to the accident
Banglore: Eight people were killed in a huge dynamite blast at a stone mining quarry at Shivamogga district in Karnataka last night. According to district collector K.B Shivakumar the blast took place near a gravel and boulder crushing facility at around 10.30 pm on Thursday night. Shockwaves of the blast reached not only Shivamogga, but also nearby districts like Chikkamagaluru and Davangere, national news channels reported. Eyewitnesses say that windowpanes of several houses in Shivamogg were shattered in the impact of the blast. The area has been cordoned off by the cops.
Police and explosives experts inspected the site in Hunasodu village of Shivamogga district where the blast occurred. Shivamogga MP B.Y Raghavendra visited the blast site. CM BS Yediyurappa has ordered a high-level probe into the blast.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and extended his condolences to the family of victims of the blast and also assured that the state government was doing everything possible to assist the affected people. Two persons including the contractor of the quarry have been taken into custody in connection with the blast in Hunasodu village, Karnataka police said. The state government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the case.
